The fear of meat is known as Carnophobia. This phobia is not the exclusive province of vegetarians: It affects many types of people, for a variety of reasons.
Reasons For This Phobia
This phobia is really quite common in our society, and many people can at least begin to comprehend the reasons for Carnophobia. Animal rights groups such as PETA have devoted a lot of time and energy to running publicity campaigns that expose the suffering of the animals we eat, and use for their fur or other animal by-products.
Is Meat Unhealthy?
As well, the health risks of eating meat are often in the news. Hormones used in the production of beef and other meats, in order to stimulate growth or protect livestock from illnesses, are believed by many to be harmful to human beings.

As if that weren’t enough, the fat content of meat also gets bad press. It has been linked with cardiovascular problems, fat deposits in the arteries, and obesity. While certain types of meat, such as chicken and even game meats like bison, are not as rich, others are certainly a prime source of dietary fat.
Carnophobics Are Often Vegetarians
Many people with Carnophobia become vegetarians or vegans in order to remove the unpleasantness of handling and ingesting meat from their daily lives. In some cases, becoming a vegetarian can be a political choice, due to environmental concerns etc. For example, global warming concerns make many vegetarians wary of eating meat, because the methane gases produced by grazing cows damage the ozone layer. People who eschew meat for this reason will cite environmental statistics regarding cows used for their meat as one primary reason why they hate meat.
PETA A Trigger?
In the mass media, PETA protesters often appear at events, such as Hollywood red carpet premieres. They tend to target people who wear fur, another animal product they associate with animal cruelty, vanity, and lack of awareness of animal rights. They have been known to throw red paint, symbolizing blood, on anyone who dares to wear fur to publicized events. They also use the phrase, Meat Stinks, in a photographic ad campaign that runs in magazines and on the Internet. Today’s vegetarian celebs pose, usually in a sexy way, above the words, “Meat Stinks”, to show their solidarity with PETA.

Do Some People Fake Carnophobia?
There can be some hypocrisy where shunning of meat and fur, and Hollywood, are concerned. Supermodel Naomi Campbell, known for her volatile temper, has posed for PETA, but also been photographed wearing fur. Sometimes, political correctness and a desire for publicity tend to get in the way of honesty with regard to living life meat-free.
People with Carnophobia are likely to become agitated when they attend functions where meat is served. Thanksgiving dinners, buffets, etc., may become a forum for intense, heated discussions about why meat should not be eaten. In some cases, vegetarians and vegans can alienate friends and loved one’s with their dietary requirements. While some who fear meat are able to adjust to being around the substance, others will avoid any and all get togethers that feature animal proteins.
Symptoms And Treatment
Symptoms of Carnophobia may include nausea and revulsion when faced with meat aromas. People may feel sick in public venues where meat is being cooked. In some cases, this sensitivity to meat will impact social life and relationships.
Treating this phobia may require some medical attention. A doctor should confirm whether any vitamin deficiencies or health problems are the result of shunning meat. In children, therapy may be required to help them process media reports about the evils of meat – especially if their parents want them to ingest meat daily.

just want to thank you a great deal for this intriguing write up. I have already bookmarked your website, when time permits I will have to have to do some thorough browsing of your blog. Well back to work with
My sister is definitely carnophobic. She is fine with being around meat and preparing it for others, but eating it is a whole other story. If there are sauces that contain meat products such as a specific bacon cheddar dip that she believes use imitation meat or flavors, she can and will eat it with no problems. Though when informed that it was not imitation bacon and indeed had real meat in it, she became nauseated and refused to eat it again. It has happened several times in the past. As long as she doesn’t know, she’s fine with eating it. If informed, she gets sick.
