This fear is known as Parturiphobia.

There are many changes that take place physically in the body of the mother who will be delivering a child. Because these changes are something she has never experienced before it can deliver a sense of fear that may be accentuated by emotional changes that coincide the gestation of the infant.

What Causes Parturiphobia?

This fear may be the result of hearing stories of childbirth from family or friends. It can result from the words of a mother who experienced a rather difficult childbirth. The fear can also find its origin in movies and television shows that depict the pain experienced in childbirth or even the death of a mother in the act of delivering a child.

This fear can then lead to a a fear of intimacy with a husband or even the fear of dating or getting married. The derivative core of the fear might be giving birth to a child.

Symptoms of Parturiphobia

This fear may express symptoms similar to that of social phobias. Because the woman fears childbirth they may seek to avoid social situations where men may be present fearing that a subsequent emotional connection could lead to an act that results in childbirth.
