Their is some reason to be afraid of cold, ice, and frost – after all, cold is dangerous to human beings. Hypothermia and frostbite are just two of the serious health problems that can be caused by exposure to the elements. Often, a person with Cryophobia will have suffered some incident out of doors that leaves them paranoid about getting cold.

People with this phobia may choose to live in warmer locales, but, if they cannot avoid the rigors of winter, they will become unhappy and even depressed when the temperature drops below zero. Since getting caught in the cold, or slipping on ice, will be the source of their tensions and anxieties, they will spend a lot of time and effort trying to minimize the effects of cold, ice and frost. Bundling up in warm layers, hats and mittens, and heavy winter boots will be important. They may also be preoccupied with salting their driveway to avoid slipping or falling, or to prevent their care from sliding around.

Road Conditions A Trigger?

Driving in winter conditions can be more difficult, The person with Cryophobia may have been in an accident as a result of bad weather. Fishtailing or sliding into ditches or other cars are more common in the winter months, and some people simply aren’t great drivers in such conditions. For certain people with this phobia, being on the road when it’s icy or freezing cold will cause extreme anxiety and even panic attack symptoms. Dizziness, headaches, and a sense of doom can occur when the roads are more treacherous due to bad weather.

Holiday Loneliness Can Be A Factor

Winter can also be a symbol of the festive holiday season. For some, it means Hanukkah or Christmas is coming. For those who feel lonely or unloved during the holiday season, which is supposed to be a time of love and togetherness, the first snow and frost of winter can be a trigger for depression and sadness. As well, some people feel isolated in wintertime, particularly when they live in rural areas. Storms and wind chills can make it difficult to go out and do things, and public transportation may not be readily available. In isolated areas, power can go down in a storm, and pipes can freeze: all these things can cause great worry, expense, and discomfort. For those who are at the mercy of winter’s power, the first signs of snow, cold, and frost can cause great trepidation.

The symptoms of this phobia include panic attacks that may render the sufferer miserable, ill and disoriented. By seeking out therapy or panic treatment to take the edge off of symptoms caused by Cryophobia, a brighter future can begin.
