Fear of Symmetry

symmetrical 1The sight of a beautiful building with symmetrical lines and design can provide great pleasure for many who find joy in precise and balanced design. The same pleasure can be derived from precise lines in a photograph, painting or clothing line. The opposite reaction can induce fear known as Symmetrophobia .

For those who live with this fear there is a natural attraction to that which is not organized or considered beautiful by traditional definitions. They may even gravitate toward the grotesque or misshapen. They may be drawn to that which is deformed and often considered less useful. Their attraction may be less motivated by compassion as it is fear of that which others find beautiful.

What Causes Symmetrophobia?

As with most fears each is motivated to tap into that fear through very personal and unique methodology. We’ll look at a few, but this is by no means an exhaustive list.

The fear of symmetry may be linked to the fear of beauty. If a person concludes that they are not especially pretty they may be inclined to fear everything they consider beautiful. This may include people, buildings, art and even music.

The fear might stem from a family background that celebrated the avant-garde. The immersion into that which may be different can lead to a fear of those things that fall outside this window of the world.

The fear might also stem from an accident that caused a change in personal physical appearance. If the fear is based on personal appearance then the fear of symmetry might actually be linked to a fear of rejection.

Symptoms of Symmetrophobia

symmetrical 2Avoidance will be a common action or inaction that can define those with Symmetrophobia. If they can’t actually avoid issues of beauty and balance they will likely avert their eyes and seek to move past the area as quickly as possible.

Other symptoms may include…

  • Trembling
  • Weeping
  • Screaming
  • Fainting
  • Air hunger
  • Elevated heart rate
  • Control loss
  • Nausea

It may seem peculiar that someone would intentionally avoid something considered beautiful and yet this fear motivates just such action.

How to Overcome Symmetrophobia

Deeper issues are generally at work when it comes to Symmetrophobia. The fear you experience will often be linked to another fear that may require intervention.

This particular fear is often a tributary in a much larger phobia flow. Tracing the fear back to its origin will be necessary in learning the truth about why you respond the way you do. It will also help you discover new ways to deal with the fears you experience.

Almost every fear an individual can experience can generally be traced back to a lie that is accepted as truth. Once this lie is accepted then it becomes easier to accept other false ideas as fact. In the end the rationale for fear is firmly grounded in incorrect information. A therapist can work to retrace your steps to the original lie and work to embrace the truth.
